Training with resistance bands can fuel brain health
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — The link between muscle strength and brain health has been gaining attention in the world as people are captivated by fitness trends and anti-aging solutions.
Scientist, inventor, and author Dr. John Jaquish talked about science-backed strategies to maintain cognitive and physical health through strength training.
He has a new perspective on how building muscle can protect the brain while we age.
“Strength training,” Dr. Jaquish said, “isn’t just about looking good; it’s about maintaining cognitive resilience and long-term brain health. Your muscles act as a protective shield for your brain, especially as you age.”
The “use it or lose it” saying can be applied to the brain and the body, and recent studies have shown that greater muscle mass matches up with larger brain volumes. This connection is then supported by the release of myokines (compounds produced during muscle activity that reduce inflammation and enhance brain function).
North Dakotans want to strive for this 2025 resolution However, Dr. Jaquish’s approach focuses on safe and effective resistance training. Unlike normal weights, resistance bands minimize the strain on joints while also maximizing muscle and cognitive benefits.
“As we get older,” he explained, “we lose muscle-building hormones. Resistance training with variable bands can help restore the hormonal balance needed to support both physical and mental health.”
And Dr. Jaquish has five tips to share with everyone.
Make resistance training a habit by engaging in challenging, full-body exercises twice a week. Choose variable resistance bands to reduce joint stress and promote strength-building. Fuel the body and brain with a protein-rich diet to support muscle growth and cognitive health. Stay consistent and aim for 60-90 minutes every week. Avoid frailty, which can be caused by delaying strength training.
