Merrily McAuliffe: For folks looking to lose weight. Many of us may turn to fasting in an effort to shed some pounds, but few people are successful in their approach. Joining us once again is Dr. John Jake Wish to discuss myths and misconceptions about calorie restricted fasting and ways to successfully reduce body fat while building muscle. Thanks again for being here, and people probably have good intentions when it comes to attempting to fast, but what would you say is the most common mistake? Why do people just fail at it?
Dr. John Jaquish: Cutting your calories is hard, especially when the foods you choose are engineered to be highly addicted. So anything that comes out of a package somebody creates it, makes it with the idea in mind that you’re going to get hooked on that.
Merrily McAuliffe: What exactly is fasting and the best schedule to attempt if you’re new to it?
Dr. John Jaquish: So when you want to go through a fasted period, it means you’re not eating any food, no calories. You can have water, you can have black coffee, but you want to do it in that order just in case anybody is confused about that. You don’t want to drink black coffee on an empty stomach. It’s just a little hard on your stomach, very acidic, and you go extended periods of time just basically skipping meals. It’s pretty simple, but no snacking either.
Merrily McAuliffe: I feel like a lot of folks would really struggle in those moments when they do get hungry or a lot of folks will say hangry. So surely there must be a mantra or maybe just a little something you could tell folks in those moments. Hey, just remember a mantra or a thought, or is there something you would tell folks who are new to it and are uncomfortable in those hungry moments? What would you tell them?
Dr. John Jaquish: So it takes about two weeks for your body to get accustomed to what you’re doing.
Merrily McAuliffe: What do you think is the biggest hurdle folks face when it comes to food consumption? Is that we’re not educated. We don’t realize how bad it really is that most of the food options we have are just bad for us and made in a lab. What do you think is the biggest hurdle when it comes to people trying to improve their diet?
Dr. John Jaquish: One of the most common Google searches when it comes to weight loss is how to lose weight without changing my diet. Now, the reason
Merrily McAuliffe: Is that the first mistake,
Dr. John Jaquish: Of course, that’s an absolute mistake because the reason somebody’s overweight is because of their diet.
Merrily McAuliffe: Dr. Jake wish. Do you have any projects you’re working on specifically maybe to help folks if they’re interested in attempting to fast?
Dr. John Jaquish: Yes. I’m going to do a whole video series on really managing that process. Also going through the psychology of choosing food, looking at food like it’s fuel as opposed to entertaining, and I think that’s one of the biggest problems with modern foods is everybody expects everything to be absolutely delicious and sweet all the time because we’re completely carbohydrated addicted.
Merrily McAuliffe: Do you have a website or somewhere we can go for some more information?
Dr. John Jaquish: Yes. Anybody that wants to connect with me, I do the most on Instagram. I just like that platform. But you can get to my YouTube channel or whatever by going to dr j.com, D-O-C-T-O-R, the letter j.com.
Merrily McAuliffe: Dr. John J. Bush joining us again on Good Day at four. Very interesting interview. Thanks so much for joining us.
